Abstract

This research focuses on a highly rare and unique dinar, which holds significant importance in its domain. Minted in the city of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the year 453 AH/1061 AD, during the reign of the Fatimid Caliph al-Mustansir Billah. The significance of this dinar lies in being the only tangible evidence of Fatimid coins minted in Medina to date, representing the sole piece that emerged after a hiatus in Islamic coinage in the city for over a quarter of a century. This dinar chronicles a historical period marked by significant competition between the Abbasid and Fatimid caliphates for control over the city of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, accompanied by a scarcity of information about the events in Medina found in available historical sources. The study aims to shed light on the coins circulating in Medina during the Fatimid era, as well as to examine this dinar in the context of the historical events witnessed by Medina during the reign of Caliph al-Mustansir Billah.
