Abstract
The historian “Al-Hasan ibn Ahmad ʿĀkish” preserved a unique text in his work “Al-Dībāj al-Khusrawānī fī Akhbār Aʿyān al-Mikhlāf al-Sulaymānī”, containing highly valuable information on the coinage issued by the ruler of the Emirate of Abu Arish, Sharif “Ḥammūd ibn Muḥammad” (1215–1233 AH/1800–1818 CE). ʿĀkish incorporated this text into the continuation he appended to “Nafḥ al-ʿŪd fī Ayyām al-Sharīf Ḥammūd” by the historian “ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Bahkalī”. In both his original work and its supplement, ʿĀkish refers to these coins as al-Ḍarbah (the “tax coinage”). Since a detailed study of this coinage will be presented separately in a forthcoming publication, the present study is confined to the silver coins struck at the mint of “Mukhtārah”, mentioned in the title above.
